Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Studer A810 with unbalanced preamp...
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:05:31 am »
Thank you very much for extended trouble shooting procedure. I shall follow that accordingly.

In the meantime I checked my available two sets of cables how they are connected inside:

Cable #1

XLR pin1 together with pin2 and connected to RCA outer
XLR pin3 connected to RCA central (hot)

Cable# 2

XLR pin 1 connected to RCA outer
XLR pin3 connected to RCA central (hot)

Both cables just plugged to my vintage preamp unbalanced inputs and without source load (Studer A810) generate a lot of noise, mainly the Cable set #2.

Actually none respects the internal pin connection as suggested by you or Richard... These cables need some reconfiguration!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer A810 with unbalanced preamp...
« on: February 13, 2014, 04:03:31 am »
Hi to all!

Last night I connected a Studer A810 with XLRs output to my McIntosh C28 RCAs with a dedicated cable (XLR -> RCA). I utilized the C28 rear inputs REC in. I didn't connected the REC out because I was interested in playback only.

The C28 is freshly refurbished and serviced so fully functionally and within specs. And then I realized a severe hum even without signal and even disconnecting the tape machine and just leaving the cables... The hum is important and intolerable with the preamp volume pot beyond 12 o' clock. I checked the cables and I noted that all the 3 pins of XLR are isolated between them. I conencted another cable (always XLR to RCA) but with pin 1 nad 2 of XLR connected and the hum is still present even less loud...

May be the cables are not suitable and leading to unwanted ground loops?

Should I need this?

Thank you for expert help!

Tape Tech / Re: Studer A810 fast forward problems‏‏
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:37:33 am »
Hello Ki,

thank you very much for concurrence and helpful suggestions. I'll do those checks.

In the meanwhile please see my video here

http://www.4shared.com/video/SCeLvk7M/L1010120.html

As you may note the problem occurs with SX reel full of tape. I shoot just two of this events. This occurs about 3-5 times, namely the first 10 minutes of Fast Forward beyond that the fast run is correct.

I guessed also about mechanical problem: the dash-pot for instance because I noticed during playing at 15 ips that the RH tension arm roller has a slight flickering (not steady). Also the two internal springs of tension arm may have lost their original retention force... What do yo think?

Thanks a lot again!

Guglielmo

Tape Tech / Studer A810 fast forward problems‏‏
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:41:03 am »
Hello to all,

please I would like to have your skilled help in fixing a little problem in my STUDER A810.

When the Left Reel (big NAB metal) is tape full I start the FAST FORWARD and the Right Reel (also big NAB metal) begins to take-up the tape. After 20-40 seconds the Right Guide Roller of the Tape Tension Sensor slowly goes to the lowest zone causing the STOP of the Fast Forward.

In principle I guessed that this was due to some "sticky" old tape and in facts restarting the FF several times (actually just 2 or 3 times because this problems occurs only at the begin of taking-up operation) the tape reaches the end and the next time in FF with the same tape the problem seems fixed or almost.

The doubt is that this happens also with new modern tapes so I guess that there is some adjustment to be made... I try to understand the Manual but it is very complex for me.

I have to underline that this problem is not present with small 7" reels.

I have noticed also that the sliding of Guide Roller makes a little "click" (like a spring or thin sheet noise) in the upper path just before the end-run.

Another clue is that the bearings of the Guide Rollers are slightly noisy so it could be that the tape tension along the path is not at its best. For that I am waiting for a new set of bearings.

Thanks a lot for useful help!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Hello ironbut,

thanks for contribution. I appreciate your useful suggestion about Studer Yahoo Groups, actually I didn't know them so I will reach for searching those spares.

Please which is the Ebayer name for IIRC in Ontario? I didn't find it...

Cheers,

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer A 810 refining
« on: July 12, 2013, 09:17:02 am »
Hello to all!

I am a recent owner of a great A 810 as well. Not yet deeply auditioned so far but I know that it has been calibrated by professional lab so at a hurried check it sounds as expected: dynamic and musical pending the tape source recording quality.

So just a little question: as far as cosmetic appearance is concerned my machine is in very good conditions, what was not near mint has been replaced (rack side rails, mains switch, front and upper panel repainted,...). Just a little spot: my 810 has a VU meter with slight scratches due to that bloodied tape cutting guide located above... So the transparent plastic is lightly scratched and the grey panel above it as well. I looked for spares but unfortunately Studer and Audio-House.ch (who is in charge of "vintage" Studer RtR spares) both have no longer available the VU plastic glass and the metallic grey panel around it.

Could someone suggest me where to find these items, even used but in better shape, to put my 810 in top conditions? OK, Ebay may be a good way but I have to hope that these paricular items will be on auction... and often they are from very used equipment!

I appreciate your support!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Studer 4 tracks...?
« on: January 22, 2013, 07:45:16 am »
Thanks jdza and ironbut for very interesting contribution!

As far as I can understand from your points it seems not so straightforward the usage of a Studer machine both with commercial 7-1/2 ips 4 tracks tapes and premium Tape Project or safety master tapes in 2 track and running @ 15 ips.
Presently I utilize a consumer (even very well made) Revox A77 4 track for 4 tracks tapes while for listening to higher quality 2 track masters I run a Nagra IV-S with QGB. The compact Nagra is a well sounding machine with great dynamics and musicality but it is quite poor on the operational side namely the QGB is always an adaptation of a field RtR as studio player so the NAB reels "maneuvering" is not so comfortable... For that I am looking for an high level RtR deck able to play these two kind of tapes which actually represent my wide tape collection.

Very interesting the topics about Studer customization for what concerns the 2-4 track heads fitting even if the technical side seems quite complex and to be designed very carefully to avoid bad operations and misalignment. Moreover the equalization issue is also to be considered so the RtR survey seems pretty complex!

Looking at the TP site I found a lot of interest in Technics machines which are very well designed and some types seems to have these 2-4 tracks features... There are a lot of version so I would ask you which Technics RtR are suggested and which version seems more suitable for "our" purposes.
Are there other vintage open reels recorders which combine semi-pro features with 2-4 tracks compatibility and IEC/NAB as well?

TEAC seems out of interest while the Sony TC 850 sports the switch on the head cover with a 2T-4T lever... Another candidate for this dual playing capability? May be but the Sony quality is not the same like Technics RS 1500 and others... Correct?

Thanks a lot for friendly help!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer 4 tracks...?
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:19:20 am »
Hello to everybody and Happy New Year!

If I remember right there was a Studer machine with "classic" studio features like 15 ips and 2 tracks on 1/4" tape but in addition the capability in playback only to read 4 tracks tapes at 7-1/2 ips. It did exist such a model or there was a custom built recorder? Actually I am looking for an high level RtR able to play both Studio Tapes (i.e. The Tape Project reels) and commercial 4 tracks classic and pop reels (Ampex, RCA, CBS,...).

Thanks for help!

Hello,

following kind information from Eileen about my TP 019 shipping I just received yesterday the parcel from US (I live in Italy).

Not yet auditioned because my Nagra is in the lab for calibration and refurbishing, anyway the presentation (box, reels, graphics,..) is superb!

As soon as I will get my RtR machine I will post my impressions.

Thank you to all!

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Nagra QGB
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:41:55 am »
Hi to all!

I own a Nagra IV-SJ and I've already asked some infos about the playback capabilities of this machine.

Actually I was looking for a large reel adapter for it (namely the QGB) and finally I found it. Now I am waiting this equipment but in the meantime I would ask if there is some RtR forumer which knows or owns this accessory in order to get some instructions about its operations.

If someone uses this type of Nagra item and has got the Owner Manual I thank in advance if may send a PDF of this.

I think that it is not difficult to use this accessory anyway the User Manual could be very helpful for me.

Thank you to all for contribution!

Thanks Steve, thanks jeri for helpful contribution.

Finally I understand why my Revox is always unbalanced with 2 track tapes! I wrongly guessed that something was to be realigned! Now it is OK!

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Quadraphonic tapes
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:44:18 am »
Thanks to all for useful contribution. Actually I was in the occasion to get some quadra-tapes but I was in doubt whether these ones could be played on 4 tracks machine...

Please another clarification dealing with tape tracks: is it normal than when I listen to original pre-recorded 2 tracks tapes on a 4 tracks machine the volume in the channels is not the same. This happens with all 2 tracks tapes so I have to increase the right channel to get a good balance... Obviously the S/N on this channel is dramatically increased...

Thanks for clarification.

Guglielmo
