The tape counter is driven from the reversing idler, that roller at the bottom of the tape loop, under the headstack. There are actually two belts, connected through an intermediate pulley. It's the bushing of that intermediate pulley that wears out and starts to squeal. We haven't had any luck lubricating that bushing. Our normal solution is to remove the belt that goes between the reversing idler and the intermediate pulley. Of course that renders the counter inoperative; we just don't find the counter useful anyway so we don't mind. It is possible to reach in there with a long tweezer and pull the belt off, then very slowly and carefully snake the belt around all the intervening machinery until you have extracted it. That leaves you proudly staring at a belt you will never need again as long as you live. Alternatively you can snip the belt and then pull it out by one end. Your choice.

The BH mod just removes the belt. It adds some friction iirc.

Knowing what it's like to get inside the machine I only want to (have to) do this once.

THANK YOU

Hi Paul,
It's been a while how are you? I am good, just trying to find out some facts. I got the induction numbers from John French, it comes on the paperwork he provides with the heads. I already have both tape pre's and I am sure a listen will determine the one that match's best. At the same time I wanted to know what these numbers mean in terms of sound quality.

I have a lot of information on the MX5050BII but I can't find the inductance specs of the heads. Where did you find that?

RE: the two repro's, I don't have a basis for comparison. I am very familiar with the Bottlehead unit, which I have been using for years. I have only heard the deHavilland at shows, though I liked what I heard.

Ok just curious because I can't remember which tape pre sounds better with this setup? Does anyone know the deHavilland vs the Tube Repro? I notice that the induction is quite different between the stock heads and the flux head, wondering what effect this would have on either tape pre?

Congratulations drdeaner on your DIY efforts - and RESULTS!

Only suggestion would be to try a few other op amps in place of the 1028 - like the LME49710, or what I feel is the best (but expensive) - OPA627/827

Larry,

It comes with one. I have no idea whether you received a tape without one, or you got one and it went missing. I'll mail you a new one, and if the original one shows up, just remember that they are suitable for framing.

I was checking my tape and discovered I was missing the album insert.  Not sure whether I ever got one.  Did one come with the album?   Thanks, Larry
